CodeWeavers CrossOver 23.5 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce that CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 23.5 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

This release offers an alternate way to run DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games through CrossOver, using components from the Apple game porting toolkit. It can be enabled by toggling on “D3DMetal” in the right bottle sidebar.

We are happy to report that this new D3DMetal option improves quality, compatibility, and performance for many games on Macs with the M1 chip or later, including Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon, Mortal Kombat 1, Deep Rock Galactic, Satisfactory, Monster Hunter Rise, God of War and Batman Arkham Knight. Note that Elden Ring and Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon default to launching with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled.

The excitement does not stop there! We are also happy to report that Baldur’s Gate 3 is working out of the box, and we recommend enabling D3DMetal or DXVK for the best experience. Denuvo games are now playable, and this release also includes support for GStreamer for multimedia decoding.

CrossOver 23.5 is the first CrossOver release with support for macOS Sonoma with optimizations from thorough compatibility testing.

CrossOver 23.5 also boasts better compatibility for a variety of distros, including Debian 13, openSUSE Leap 15.1 and the upcoming Ubuntu 23.10 release.

Lastly CrossOver 23.5 includes a handful of fixes, including special characters not rendering in certain apps and components not loading with MetaTrader 4.

Change Log :

 23.5.0 CrossOver - September 27, 2023

  • macOS:
    • Support for translation layer from the game porting toolkit.
    • New D3DMetal toggle.
    • Support for macOS Sonoma.
    • Baldur's Gate 3 runs on Ventura and Sonoma.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 23.0.0 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce that CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 23 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

CrossOver 23 includes an update to Wine 8.0.1, bringing with it over 5,000 changes that offer improvements to a variety of applications. This release also includes an update to Wine Mono 7.4.0, vkd3d 1.8, DXVK 1.10.3 and MoltenVK 1.2.3.

Our most exciting feature is initial DirectX 12 support on macOS. Diablo II Resurrected and Diablo IV are currently running well on macOS Ventura, making them the first DirectX 12 games working on a released macOS version. This breakthrough was the culmination of years of development, and we look forward to continuing to aggressively pursue support for even more DirectX 12 titles. Diablo IV is also newly working on Linux with the CrossOver 23 release.

We’re pleased to announce that this release also includes initial support for geometry shaders and transform feedback on macOS Ventura. This unlocks many games that previously suffered from missing graphics or black screens in-game. Risk of Rain 2, TEKKEN 7, Octopath Traveler, Street Fighter V, Astroneer, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and Trailmakers are just some of the titles that are now running on CrossOver 23. Note that using wined3d instead of DXVK will produce the best results for games using geometry shaders. And speaking of wined3d, our team also noted some nice performance improvements with wined3d.

EA App is now running on both macOS and Linux with CrossOver 23. Many EA App games are now working, including The Sims 4, Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. If you are running EA App games through Steam, make sure to install “EA App for Steam” into your bottle: that CrossTie installs needed dependencies.

For our Linux users, we worked around an XWayland bug, and Office 365 applications are now running with better performance with Wayland under CrossOver 23.

One of the most requested features we get for the CrossOver GUI is the ability to uninstall applications, and that is now possible with CrossOver 23. Uninstalling is now a quick operation: simply go to the “Bottle Details” at the bottom of the right sidebar for your bottle and right-click on the application listed under “Installed Software” to find the uninstall option. CrossOver also now deletes launchers for uninstalled applications. For example, launchers for games uninstalled through Steam will now be removed for you.

Of course, this release also contains some important bug fixes, including fixes for the latest Quicken, Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, Age of Empires II Definitive Edition and Ubisoft Connect updates that caused those applications to stop working with CrossOver.

Lastly, a note about macOS Sonoma. Currently, CrossOver 23 runs on the Sonoma beta, but there are definitely known issues. We are working on fixes, and we plan to release an update to CrossOver 23 that will be fully compatible with it.

Change Log :

Why pirating CrossOver makes you a turd

Periodically, we come across links to pirated versions of CrossOver or instructions for how to pirate CrossOver yourself. While we know that all software companies have to combat piracy efforts, this still really bums us out. We are a small open-source software company full of passionate people who take so much pride in our projects and products. Our work is challenging, interesting and rewarding. Dealing with people who steal from us is none of those things.

We are fully aware of how people are hacking our beloved CrossOver to use it without paying, and there are a couple of paths we could take to thwart their efforts. We could stop offering a free, easily accessible 14 day free trial and/or we could make substantial development changes to target the ways we know people are pirating CrossOver. Neither of those options is particularly desirable to us. We pride ourselves on our fully functional no-hassle, no-obligation trial, because we want to make sure that our users love CrossOver before committing to purchasing it. Making development changes to circumvent pirating would divert development resources away from all of the cool new features we want to implement. Neither of these options are fair to people that buy our product: we want them to be able to confirm that CrossOver is right for them before buying AND we want to continue to offer better and better compatibility with a wide range of Windows applications to our new and existing customers. Our priorities might shift in the future if we suspect piracy is becoming more common, but we really don’t want that to happen.

So what’s a person to do if they want to run Windows applications on macOS, Linux or ChromeOS but they don’t want to pay full price for CrossOver? We run promotions several times throughout the year, including Black Friday deals and after each CrossOver release. You can sign up here to receive notifications for upcoming promotions. Renewals of our CrossOver + product provide you with an additional year of support and upgrades, and those are 50% off if purchased within a year of your previous purchase. There are also plenty of free alternatives to CrossOver! CrossOver is based on the Wine project, which is free to use. And since Wine and CrossOver are both open source, there are many other free products based on Wine and CrossOver’s source code. We welcome folks to take advantage of those alternatives; we only ask that if you decide that CrossOver is the best solution for you, you pay for our team’s efforts.

We appreciate each and every person that has shown support for CrossOver with their purchase of a license. Our small but mighty band of misfits loves our work and wants to keep providing the best product and experience we can.

How to Install Microsoft Office on Linux

Microsoft Office on Linux is possible. Here are three methods for getting Microsoft Office installed in a Linux environment.

The most widely used office productivity suite in the world is Microsoft Office. It doesn't matter if your PC runs Windows 10 or macOS, it's likely that you're using Microsoft Office. If you're not, you have a colleague who is.

But your PC runs Linux. How on earth are you going to install Microsoft Office on Linux and use it without running into problems?

Getting Microsoft Office on Linux is easy. We cover three methods for running Microsoft Office in a Linux environment.

How to Install Microsoft Office on Linux

You have three ways to run Microsoft's industry-defining office software on a Linux computer:

  1. Use Microsoft Office on the web in a Linux browser
  2. Install Microsoft Office using PlayOnLinux
  3. Use Microsoft Office on a Windows virtual machine

Note that there is no Microsoft Office 365 for Linux. There is also no MS Office for Linux, but these methods let you run Microsoft Office on Linux without the enhancements Office 365 brings. In case you're not sure, here are the differences between MS Office and Microsoft Office 365.

Option 1: Use Microsoft Office in a Browser

It might not be the full Microsoft Office, but what is made available via your browser is certainly good enough for a big chunk of office-based tasks. It's an easy way to start without paying for the full Microsoft Office suite.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook can all be accessed via your browser and Microsoft account.

Is your copy of Microsoft Office via monthly subscription to Office 365? Linux users can take advantage of the advanced browser-based tools that make this version of Office almost as complete as the Windows, Mac, and mobile versions.

As the suite is browser-based, it's not going to be available offline. However, you can make things smoother by setting office.live.com as a desktop shortcut. Files will be saved to the cloud, and the best way to manage this is with a Microsoft OneDrive account.

Without Office 365, you'll get a stripped-back collection of features. Though useful in a pinch, it doesn't do everything you expect.

Option 2: Install Microsoft Office Using PlayOnLinux

Need the full Microsoft Office on Linux? You'll need to install it. Now, you probably think that it isn't possible to install Windows software on Linux, and to a certain degree, that is true. Fortunately, other tools are available to help you install Windows software like Microsoft Word on Linux, along with the rest of the office suite.

The simplest way to install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu is using CrossOver or PlayOnLinux. The following instructions are for installing Office 365 on Ubuntu, but you'll be able to customize this for distros that use different package managers.

Install PlayOnLinux

Begin by opening a terminal and installing winbind:

sudo apt install winbind

This is a tool that ensures that PlayOnLinux correctly links the Windows login on the software you're attempting to install. You may also need to install cURL and p7zip-full if they're not already installed.

Next, install PlayOnLinux.

sudo apt install playonlinux

Alternatively, you can open your distro's app installer. On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and above, use Ubuntu Software to search for PlayOnLinux and click Install. Wait for the installation to complete.

Now, all you need to do is launch PlayOnLinux from Menu > Applications. To install Microsoft Office, click the Office tab, then either use the search field or browse the list. Note that you'll need to install the full suite, as no individual apps (aside from Project 2010, Word Viewer, and Excel Viewer) are available.

You'll notice that with each app you select in PlayOnLinux, a summary of compatibility is displayed on the right. For further details about this, click the link. A browser window will take you to WineHQ, where you can find out more.

On Linux, you're limited to Microsoft Office 2016 as the latest version (the 32-bit version, at best). For the best, most stable results, use Microsoft Office 2016 (method B). For this, you'll need the installation media (or ISO file) or setup file, along with a genuine product key.

Install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu With PlayOnLinux

With the ISO file ready, click Install.

The PlayOnLinux wizard will start and prompt you to select a DVD-ROM or a setup file. Choose the appropriate option, then Next. If you're using a setup file, you'll need to browse to where this is stored on your Linux system.

Click Next to proceed with the installation. Once complete, Microsoft Office will be ready to run on Linux.

You'll be able to run Microsoft Office from the desktop without separately loading PlayOnLinux, which will run in the background.

Need a feature that is only available in the latest version of Microsoft Office? Consider CrossOver, a paid tool with a free trial that can run more recent versions of Microsoft Office.

Installation of CrossOver is more straightforward than PlayOnLinux, while installation of Office is along similar lines (there is a developmental connection between the two tools).

And yes, having Windows software running effortlessly on your Linux PC really is amazing, isn't it? You'll find that PlayOnLinux can support several other applications, as well as many Windows games. In short, this is how you can install MS Office on Ubuntu.

Option 3: Install Microsoft Office 365 on Linux in a Windows VM

There is another option for anyone wishing to install Microsoft Office on their Linux computer. This isn't as easy as the others, however, unless you're already running a Windows virtual machine.

In this case, all you need to do is boot your virtual machine, sign into Windows, and install Microsoft Office. Linux users can install any version of Office this way, unlike using Wine/PlayOnLinux, which can be useful for file compatibility.

Get Microsoft Office for Linux Today!

Microsoft Office is not the most ideal option for running office tasks on Linux systems. However, if it's what you need to get the job done, you have four good options to install MS Office on Linux.

Yes, open-source alternatives are best for most Linux office productivity tasks but installing Microsoft Office overcomes document compatibility problems. This can prove vital in meeting deadlines or accessing complex spreadsheets and databases.

Once you've sorted out installing Microsoft Office on Linux, don't stop there. You can install much more Windows software on Linux.

Run Windows software on Mac Linux and ChromeOS with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Even if you’re not a Windows user, you never know when you might need Windows to run a certain software. For instance, did you know TurboTax for Business is only available on Windows?

If you’re running a Mac, Linux, or ChromeOS operating system, CrossOver+ Windows Compatibility App is a major asset. CrossOver is the easiest way to run Microsoft applications on your non-Windows computer without dealing with the clunkiness of a Windows emulator. Rather than an emulator, CrossOver translates Windows commands to your present operating system, allowing you to run Windows software as if it was designed for your native environment. From productivity software to games, it all runs better, and you can set it up in a matter of minutes.

Michelle Delio of Wired writes, “In general, running CrossOver Office was so similar to using Office on a standard Windows system that it was sometimes difficult to remember the PC was actually running Linux.”

CodeWeavers CrossOver 22.1 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce that CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 22.1 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

CrossOver 22.1 offers support for 32-bit DirectX 10/11 games on macOS. Our QA team’s test results confirm that several games are newly playable, including Command and Conquer Remastered Collection, Total War ROME II - Emperor Edition, BioShock Infinite and Magicka 2.

This release includes several other improvements on the gaming front. We updated the SDL version to improve controller support on macOS. In particular, CrossOver now has rumble support, and the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller now works. Also for our Mac users, GTA Online is no longer crashing after a short period of playtime. We fixed an issue with Ubisoft Connect no longer running after a recent update. Additionally, we included over 400 updates to wined3d from upstream Wine and updated vkd3d to version 1.5.

For our Linux users, we fixed a crash with Adobe Acrobat Reader 11. We also fixed dependency issues for Fedora 37 and OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

CrossOver 22.1 includes fixes for several regressions, including an issue where some macOS users were seeing blank windows for a variety of applications. Last but not least, we’re happy to report that this release has several translation updates, including Turkish, Hindi, Indonesian, Slovak, Romanian and Ukrainian.

CodeWeavers CrossOver Mac 22 review

There will always be apps — mostly games — whose publishers won’t port them to the Mac for financial or contractual reasons. Codeweavers’ CrossOver offers a simple, convenient way to run many of those apps. The result isn’t as reliable or universal as other solutions, but it’s a lot cheaper and easier, and with CrossOver’s helpful database of app functionality and generous try-before-you-buy period, you can see whether it’ll run the apps you want to use before you commit your hard-earned cash.

CrossOver translates Windows commands into Mac ones on the fly — like hiring an interpreter to help you in a foreign country, rather than learning the language yourself. It’s based on the open-source WINE project, but its improvements to standard WINE make it a lot easier for everyday users to successfully run.

CrossOver 22 is only available from Codeweavers' web site. $74 gets you a full copy and a year’s worth of updates to the app. Once that period elapses, you can still use the copy you already have as long as you want to, but you won’t be able to download fresh updates. You'll have a limited window of time after your subscription expires to renew it for roughly $30.

You can also pay $494 for CrossOver Life, which removes the need for annual renewals. The company tends to offer once-a-year discounts around Black Friday, sometimes slashing the cost of a year's updates to as little as $15.

After a quick installation, CrossOver does most of the hard work for you. It sets up a “bottle” — a contained virtual environment — in which you can install basic Windows or Linux underpinnings, plus any apps you’d care to run. CrossOver builds in shortcuts to install popular apps like Steam, and it can seamlessly install apps from the Internet, from downloaded ISO files, or from a physical disc, should you have an external drive.

You can have multiple separate bottles for different apps, or put all the apps you use in a single vessel. As with containerized software setups like Docker, this makes CrossOver easier and less stressful to use. In the unlikely event that something goes horribly wrong inside a bottle, it won’t affect your larger system. You can just delete the bottle and start fresh.

CrossOver 22’s biggest leap forward lies in its overhauled interface.

Each new version of CrossOver offers under-the-hood improvements to help all apps in general and specific titles in particular run better. But CrossOver 22’s biggest leap forward lies in its overhauled interface.

Previous versions hid important toggles and features behind poorly designed contextual menus. CrossOver 22 takes its design cues instead from the Mac App Store, putting crucial options in full view. It’s easier than ever to run apps you’ve already installed, or add new ones.

Codeweavers’ database of popular apps and their compatibility, maintained by volunteer testers, is now more directly integrated into the app itself, rather than requiring a separate visit to Codeweavers's web site. That database isn’t comprehensive — some titles I’ve personally used under CrossOver aren’t included — but it’s a good place to start when you’re curious about whether a particular app will run there.

The path between original Windows code and successful Mac execution isn’t always straight. For instance, Windows games use a set of tools known as DirectX to enable 3D graphics. CrossOver has to pass those commands through an open-source translator called DXVK, which maps them to the open-source Vulkan 3D standard. These Vulkan commands must then go through another interpreter, MoltenVK, to run under Apple’s own 3D toolkit, Metal.  Each of these handoffs eats up processing power and makes the resulting games run slower and less reliably than they would if coded for the Mac from the get-go.

The beefier your processing power, the better performance you’ll get from CrossOver. Even though it’s an Intel native app, it runs best on Apple silicon under Rosetta 2 emulation, thanks to the sheer horsepower of the M1 and higher.  (CrossOver plans to eventually support Apple silicon, but Codeweavers says that transition is likely years away.)  Popular launcher apps like Steam, and simpler 2D games like Guacamelee, ran without a hitch in my tests, but more sophisticated titles had various degrees of tradeoffs.

If you want to game with CrossOver, having more than 8GB RAM or something more powerful than a basic M1 will likely serve you well.

When I ran 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II on my stock M1 Mac Mini, the game looked great. But depending on the game mode and the size and type of the environments I found myself in, performance ranged from fast and fluid to an unplayable crawl. I’ve seen YouTube videos of other CrossOver users playing the game much more smoothly, even on levels that choked my computer. If you want to game with CrossOver, having more than 8GB RAM or something more powerful than a basic M1 will likely serve you well.

Furthermore, Metal has different aims and priorities than DirectX, trading some measure of tech sophistication for the ability to run across MacOS, iOS, and tvOS. Even under Apple’s recently announced Metal 3, there are just some things DirectX does for which Metal lacks an easily translated equivalent.

Though the game mostly ran smoothly barring some pauses for loading, the world around my protagonist rendered as a mass of flickering black triangles.

I saw this firsthand playing Jedi: Fallen Order. Though the game mostly ran smoothly barring some pauses for loading, the world around my protagonist didn’t render right, presenting a mass of flickering black triangles instead of realistic surroundings. I was able to adapt and still enjoy the game, but if you’re looking for absolute fidelity, consider this fair warning.

And even if everything else goes swimmingly, there are some facets of Windows software that just won’t work outside that platform, no matter what. Barring some miracle in a future version, I’ll never know how well Star Wars: Squadrons runs on CrossOver, because the anti-cheating software for its multiplayer mode won’t cooperate, shutting down every attempt to install the game.

ntel Macs can directly install Windows through Boot Camp, but this option isn't available on newer Apple Silicon-powered Macs.

Virtual machines like VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop let Mac users run Windows and its apps. By emulating the entire Windows operating system, they  offer better compatibility with more kinds of PC apps, especially games.

Both apps are Apple Silicon native and can, with various degrees of workarounds, run Apple Silicon-friendly ARM-based versions of Windows 11 (and their apps) natively. CrossOver tops out at apps for Windows 10, and because of the engineering complexities involved, Codeweavers says it won't offer a native Apple Silicon version for several more years.

But Parallels and VMWare each cost more than a year of CrossOver updates, and neither will work without a copy of Windows itself. Even an older version of that can run you as much as $140.

CrossOver 22 is impressive in its simplicity — at least in terms of how easy it is to get select Windows applications up and running on macOS. It's by no means perfect, and your mileage will vary dramatically depending on the complexity of the applications you're looking to run, not to mention the power of your Mac computer itself. But with prudent use of the free trial to test your must-work apps, it's a great opportunity to bridge the gap between Apple and Microsoft's computing worlds.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 22 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 22 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

The hallmark of this release is a complete redesign of the CrossOver user interface for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. These changes were designed with two goals in mind: both to make CrossOver more intuitive to use and to offer a more modern look and feel. We are grateful to our BetterTesters who responded to our survey and participated in our usability studies: your feedback was invaluable!

CrossOver 22 includes an update to Wine 7.7, bringing with it over 10,000 changes that offer improvements to a variety of applications. This release also includes an update to Wine Mono 7.2.0 and vkd3d 1.4.

On the macOS side, we have been continuing to make gaming performance improvements. Between including the wined3d changes available with Wine 7.7, updating to MoltenVK version 1.1.10 and adding a few other tweaks, we’ve made quite a bit of progress. One particularly exciting example is Rocket League: the performance using wined3d is much better than CrossOver 21.2, and the nameplates are visible in-game (unlike using DXVK). Our initial tests show that CrossOver 22 runs pretty well on the macOS Ventura beta. Please note that we cannot offer official support for Ventura until it is released due to the possibility of changes during beta causing problems for CrossOver support. After Ventura is released, we will post an update on our website, so make sure you are subscribed to our blog to get the latest updates on Ventura compatibility.

CrossOver 22 also offers initial support for DirectX 12 games on Linux. A handful of DirectX 12 games are running well, including Diablo II Resurrected. We also have a few fixes to Office 2016/365 bugs for our Linux and ChromeOS users.

If you use CrossOver to play GTA Online, please see this forum post with information about potential bans from Rockstar Games.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 21.2 for Linux Mac and Chrome OS

I’m thrilled to announce that we have released CrossOver 21.2 for macOS, Linux and Chrome OS!

This new release offers both improvements from upstream Wine and important fixes for a variety of issues.

CrossOver 21.2 includes over 300 updates to wined3d from upstream Wine. We also included dozens of changes from Wine 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 and updated to Wine Mono 7.0.

Audio now works on both Mac and Linux for Halo: Master Chief Collection. We also fixed an issue with a recent Steam update that was causing some connections to take a very long time.

On macOS, we fixed a long-standing issue with mouse control in Unity games. We also included fixes for the latest Rockstar Games Launcher and Quicken updates that caused those applications to stop working on M1 machines.

For our Linux and Chrome OS users, we fixed rendering issues on Office 365. We also made changes so that CrossOver once again seamlessly installs on Chrome OS, and we added a fix for libldap dependency errors on certain Linux distros (including Ubuntu 21.10).

CodeWeavers CrossOver 21.1 for Linux Mac and Chrome OS

I’m thrilled to announce that we have released CrossOver 21.1 for macOS, Linux and Chrome OS!

In addition to a suite of fixes for a variety of applications, CrossOver 21.1 also includes some pretty cool enhancements. We’re very excited about them, and we hope you will be too.

Our big reveal for this release is much-awaited support for Grand Theft Auto V (including GTA Online) on both macOS and Linux. Starting with CrossOver 21.1, you can now run Grand Theft Auto V via either the standalone Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam.

This release is also the first to offer official support for the newly released macOS Monterey. We also added support for several games that previously did not run on macOS and fixed an issue for certain launchers that were not working on macOS with CrossOver 21 (including MicroTik The Dude).

For our Linux users, we restored support for Outlook 2016/365.

On Chrome OS, resolving dependency issues should be much smoother with this release.

CrossOver 21.1 includes several other fixes, including ones for the recent updates to Ubisoft Connect and Quicken that caused problems running them in CrossOver. Additionally, this release includes improvements to wined3d and an update to Wine Mono 6.3.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 21 for Linux Mac and Chrome OS

I’m thrilled to announce that CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 21 for macOS, Linux and Chrome OS!
CrossOver 21 includes an update to Wine 6.0, bringing with it thousands of improvements to a variety of applications. One of the more exciting features of Wine 6.0 is the Vulkan backend for wined3d. This feature is on by default on macOS for 64-bit Direct3D 10/11 games if DXVK is not enabled. Our testing results have largely been positive, but we know of a few games that run with DXVK but do not currently run with wined3d. We also have found a few games that work with wined3d but not DXVK. Notably, NieR:Automata should run on all platforms with wined3d on CrossOver 21, and Skyrim Special Edition should be newly playable on M1 Macs with wined3d.

macOS users running Big Sur 11.3 or later will also find that Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers now work with Bluetooth.

Also relevant to our macOS users is the addition of dark mode support to the CrossOver UI. We hope that dark mode fans whose eyes are currently shocked when they open CrossOver will be pleased with the changes.

We have several fixes for Office 2016/365 on Linux, including better support for multi-monitor configurations and a fix for problems entering a password to sign in to and activate Office.

Both our Chrome OS and Linux users should notice faster startup times when opening CrossOver 21

In addition to many other fixes for various applications, we have updated the version of DXVK we ship to 1.7, and we also now ship Wine Mono with CrossOver.

Lastly, I want to touch on one thing that CrossOver 21 does NOT currently include: support for macOS Monterey. We have been working closely with Apple on a solution, but right now CrossOver will not run on Monterey. We expect to be able to offer support for Monterey on CrossOver later this year in time for Monterey’s release. We will be posting progress updates on our website, so make sure you are subscribed to our blog to get the latest updates on Monterey compatibility.

Run Windows software on your Chromebook

CrossOver is a commercial compatibility layer by CodeWeavers, based on the Wine project, which aims to run popular Windows software on Unix-based operating systems. CodeWeavers released the first beta of CrossOver for Chrome OS three years ago, and now it's finally ready for the masses.

CrossOver 20 was released today as the first version that officially supports Chrome OS. It comes configured to run thousands of popular Windows applications, including World of Warcraft, Steam, Quicken, GOG Galaxy, Microsoft Office, and others. Unlike the Parallels-based VM that Google is working on, CrossOver translates Windows API calls as needed, rather than emulating the entire operating system.

The Chrome OS version now runs on top of the Linux container, instead of running as an Android application like earlier betas did. CodeWeavers said in a blog post, "We feel that providing CrossOver using this route provides a superior user experience." However, this does mean that older Chromebooks without support for Linux apps won't be able to use the newer version.

CrossOver is paid software with three packages available. You can buy the current version for $39.95, and a Pro version with free software upgrades for a year (plus discounts on future releases) and additional customer support is available for $59.95. Finally, if you think you'll use CrossOver until the heat death of the universe, a lifetime support option is available for $494.00.

CrossOver 20 for Chrome OS Mac and Linux Has Shipped

CrossOver® 20 for macOS and Linux has arrived! Additionally, Chrome OS joins its cousins, macOS and Linux, in bringing a smooth Windows application experience with CrossOver 20.

Across All Platforms
CrossOver 20 includes Wine 5.0 (with over 3,400 improvements) and the ability to rate applications within the CrossOver UI.

Mac
The macOS version offers support for macOS 11, including Apple Silicon. The macOS version also includes major improvements to support for games, including 32 bit games that are no longer available for the Mac, DirectX11 and 12 games and the Steam client.

Linux
The Linux version undertook a thorough review of Linux distribution support, with an effort to integrate cleanly with all modern distributions and support for CrossOver to upgrade itself.

Chrome OS
Our CrossOver Chrome OS product shares about 99% of its DNA with our CrossOver Linux product. Our initial Chrome OS product was built on Android, because Google provided support for Android applications. However, since then, Google has provided support for Linux applications. We feel that providing CrossOver using this route provides a superior user experience. Using Google’s Linux container support, CrossOver enables a Chromebook to run various Window applications as if they
were native and without requiring a Windows operating system. Not only does it integrate directly with the Chrome OS shelf, it also works in offline mode as well as it does in online mode.

It’s not just cosmetic...
Yes! We have a new look. The completely reimagined corporate branding and its sub-brands, CrossOverTM, PortJumpTM and ExecModeTM reveal the evolution of the company over the past 14 years, while maintaining our ongoing commitment to the open-source community and its talent.

CodeWeavers released CrossOver 19.0.0 for Linux and MacOS

CodeWeavers just released CrossOver 19.0.0 for both macOS and Linux!

The capstone of CrossOver 19 is the new ability to run 32 bit Windows applications within a 64 bit process.  This enables us to support 32 bit Windows applications on the new macOS release, Catalina, which removed all support for 32 applications in October.

This has been a remarkably difficult challenge, and I appreciate everyone's patience with us as we strove to make this happen.  I particularly want to call out and celebrate the work of Ken Thomases, the senior developer  at CodeWeavers who has worked tirelessly on this for the past year and a half.

In addition to that change, CrossOver’s core technology Wine has been updated to bring much of the developments of the past year to all of our users on both Mac and Linux.  These changes include over 5,000 individual improvements, all of which will act together to improve the end user experience with CrossOver.

We have improved installation compatibility with recent Linux distributions and also taken the step of upgrading CrossOver to rely on Python 3...
