Putty brings Telnet and FTP support back to macOS High Sierra

With the release of macOS 10.13 High Sierra Apple has decided to remove basic Telnet and FTP support from their flagship operating system, mainly due to security concerns. While reading over some forum post I came across post like this one.

"Apple in all their "infinite" wisdom has decided to remove Telnet and FTP from their command line tools. Now this is so brain dead, I can't believe it! I read a few forums where people were like, "Well use SSH and SFTP instead. Telnet is not secure." Who the F**K are you to tell me what tool to use? I work with devices every day that have nothing but telnet and don't have SSH on them! Apple has basically decided to screw developers and cripple their Unix."

Well it's not the end of the world you know, their are other solutions to bring these basic tools back to your Mac. One of the easiest and simplest solutions is to spend $19.95 and purchase a PuTTY for Mac license. PuTTY has support for SSH, FTP, SFTP, Telnet, rlogin and more.

Running PuTTY for Mac on a Retina 5K Display

I have had a few people ask me recently if Putty for Mac would run on their Retina Display and after doing some test I can happily say it runs perfectly fine. Their is however one minor outstanding issue, PuTTY won't run at ultra-high resolution at this time. Now back to working on the upcoming PuTTY for Mac 9.0.0 release.  :)

About PuTTY for Mac :

Putty is one of the Best Terminal Emulators available today. It Supports different types of Network Protocols such as SSH, FTP, SCP, Telnet etc. In Windows it is used as SSH Client to connect to Your Linux server or for some other purpose But what will you do if you are on Mac? You might be thinking , Is there any Software like Putty for Mac Available? The answer is Yes! With the help of some other Software’s we can Use putty on MacOS although Putty is used widely on Windows Platform. Official Versions of Putty are available on Unix like Platforms, and now it’s widely available for Mac systems running OSX 10.9.5 or higher.

SSH is available by default in Mac and Linux or Unix. Although you can use terminal for SSH connections still there are some benefits in using Putty such as Other clients don’t keep connections alive whereas Putty does. Also it is cool to use Putty as your SSH client if you are doing some Amazon AWS, VMware ESXi or CISCO Stuffs, transferring files, managing files on a server or whatever.

The cost of Putty 8.7.0 is only $15.00. Anyone who has purchased Putty in the past three months is entitled to a free upgrade. Putty comes with three months of upgrades and of course a 14-day money back guarantee.

Supported Protocols:
  • Telnet
  • FTP
  • SFTP
  • SSH
  • SCP
About Wine Reviews:

There is a multitude of software developed only for the Windows operating system and even when software vendors port their applications to another platform, generally it lacks features that the Windows version contains. The only solution these developers face is to have access to both systems for testing which leads to increased infrastructure demands, and wasted project resources. Our goal is to have native ports of essential Windows tools and applications made available for MacOS users.

New WineHQ 64 bit Wine OS X binary packages available

This is a updated post to the original post located here, the link in the original doesn't point to the latest 64 bit WineHQ Wine and Wine-Staging binary builds for Apple OS X this article updates the download links to the latest builds.

Hi all,

Recently there were multiple requests to provide experimental OS X 64 bit packages. I decided to give it a try and updated our build system and cross compiling tool-chain during the last days. Luckily the whole idea turned out to be less difficult than I thought, and I can now present you the first 64-bit Wine packages for testing. It would be great to have some testers to find out if I made a mistake during the packaging and to evaluate how good the OS X 64 bit support already works, despite the GS segment / TEB problem.

You can find the latest test packages at https://repos.wine-staging.com/macosx/i686/ I didn't use the WineHQ url because those packages are really in a very early stage, so I would like to have some more testers first before we push it to the users. The pkg installer will now provide you with an option to enable 64 bit support. The files of the 32-bit and 64-bit build are merged during the installation depending on your choice. Please test both options to ensure that a pure 32-bit build also still works as expected.

The wine devel package is a pure Wine build without any additional patches applied, while the staging package contains a small hack to work around at least some of the GS segment issues (it fixed 64 bit VLC and TS3 for me). If you stumble upon any differences between both packages (besides the staged bugs), feel free to tell them to me. This way I can find out how much the hack breaks ;-). Anyway, I am looking forward to your feedback.

Regards,
Michael Müller

Twin Cities entrepreneur seeks a uneeq marketing approach

Touchfire keyboard cases for Apple iPad tablets are among a still-modest selection of products on the Uneeq tech-retail site, a Minneapolis effort that is debuting this week. (Touchfire)

Does the Internet need another tech-retail site with gadgets and software for sale? Michael Wray thinks so -- provided such a site is unique.

The Minneapolis man this week is launching Uneeq, a tech-retail site he hopes eventually will impress geekier consumers with an interest in offbeat gizmos and software at often steep discounts.
It's early days for Uneeq, however. The site still doesn't have much of an inventory. Its initial marquee offering is a Macintosh-software "bundle" with eight titles for a combined cost of about $30, which would usually sell for $228 or so.

Other software options include a pair of Smile Software apps for the Macintosh, PDFPen and TextExpander. Hardware offerings include an assortment of Touchfire-branded keyboard cases for Apple iPad tablets, along with an emergency flashlight and several device-charging products.
That's pretty much it.

Wray, a veteran Apple-software retailer, said he is not concerned about eventually getting Uneeq's product selection fleshed out.

Wray said he ran into a not-unexpected problem: Convincing the makers of tech products to ally themselves with a site that didn't yet exist. Now that Uneeq is live on the Web, he is confident that he'll have more vendors soon.

Wray's reputation will surely help. He's been operating Minneapolis-based Mariner Software for more than a decade, and the company itself goes back a quarter-century. Wray's role at Mariner continues, but he said he hungered to start something new.

To that end, he has entirely "bootstrapped" the Uneeq venture himself, in a collaboration with his Mariner Software business partner Dusty Fields. So far, he hasn't needed venture capital or angel investors.

"I was able to call in some favors from friends and associates" for marketing, business-strategy and technical assistance, he said. "No money, though. Starting a company doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive venture, if you know what you are doing."

For Wray, Uneeq "has been an itch that needed scratching, to launch something other than a software company." Wray anticipates the company will become largely a tech-gadget purveyor with an Apple-centric, young-adult male clientele.

At the same time, Uneeq is following the time-honored tradition of offering software bundles -- sets of complementary apps sold together at sharp discounts, often with hugely successful results.
The Mac-software bundle now on Uneeq's home page is a sign of what is likely to come, Wray said.

CrossOver 14.1.11 для Mac OS

CODEWEAVERS LAUNCHES CROSSOVER 12.5 FOR LINUX AND MAC

Update includes Wine 1.6, new Linux UI, better MS Outlook support, and full support for Chinese

SAINT PAUL, Minn (August 13, 2013) — CodeWeavers, Inc., developer of CrossOver software which enables Mac and Linux users to run Windows software on their computers without the need of a Microsoft license, announced today the release of its new software, CrossOver 12.5.

Although a point release, CrossOver 12.5.0 is a major step forward from previous versions of CrossOver. The new version incorporates the latest version of Wine - the Windows compatibility technology which underlies CrossOver. Wine 1.6 brings thousands of improvements to application compatibility.
On Linux, CrossOver has a new user interface. A list of launchers for all installed Windows applications is present in CrossOver's main application window, which improves usability with modern Linux desktop environments.

We have spent substantial time improving our support for Microsoft Outlook. Outlook users who run on laptops may notice that their Outlook connections remain active when their laptops change networks or awake from sleep. CrossOver 12.5.0 also includes improved support for Quicken, Internet Explorer 7, and improved compatibility with the Microsoft Office suite.\

Finally, CrossOver 12.5.0 has improved Chinese language support, and runs more popular Chinese applications than ever before. We have fixed crashes in the Chinese versions of Microsoft Office 2010; we have added Chinese language titles to our application database, and CrossOver is fully translated into Chinese. CodeWeavers has now begun selling CrossOver directly in China.

Codeweavers working on wine for Google Android operating system

Codeweavers is working on wine for android

CodeWeavers‘ is working on an Android version of Wine, the program for Unix-based operating systems that makes running Windows applications possible. The lead developer of Wine demonstrated recently at the meeting in Brussels at Fosdem. So we must ask is Wine and CrossOver for iOS also in the works?

When Wine for Android is released, users of smartphones and tablets with Google’s mobile operating system software can easily run games and applications that was originally made for Windows. The Android version of Wine is not nearly finished. According to the briefing represented in Brussels, Wine on Android is still extremely slow.
