Wine-Doors ditches IEs4Linux

From Wine-Doors site

We’ve ditched IEs4Linux, our reasons for this are many, mostly we couldn’t pull IE in as a dep, and the bottling arrangement would have made progress slow for us. We’ve used code from the original IEs4Linux script and trimmed it down and involved wine-doors dependencies rather than a full out overwriting of everything. We’ll probably still need to trim the registry down a bit, and we’ll offer another package for “FakeIE” soon so you can skirt around the problem if wine-gecko (the default html engine) won’t.

installing ie

YouTube version

We’re involving downloads from various sources now, we’re hoping that linking to places like click-now.net isn’t a bad thing and it’ll get apps like photoshop out there much faster, also we’re driving business for adobe, maybe they’ll notice a sudden increase in CS2 sales…

In other news, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Quake4 have been added to the repos by Andy as reference packs for repackaging loki installers into wine-doors, these use native binaries and just use wine-doors as the conduit, these packages are being improved all the time and we’ll be adding more games like these later, re-adding ET:QW as a native application once we’ve gotten around some mojo-setup issues.

We’re concentrating on packages for now, and we’ll be bringing you updates on the feature set of 0.2 which is now in development.

Please post any comments about this post to the new forum at wine-reviews.net In the near future this post will be removed from wine-review.blogspot so please visit our new and improved site and update your bookmarks.

KeyNote 1.6.5 on Linux with Wine

About KeyNote
KeyNote is a tabbed notebook with a Rich-Text editor, multilevel tree notes and strong encryption. It's ideal for free-form or structured information. The application stores many notes within one file. Each note can contain a hierarchical tree of topics. KeyNote features powerful editing, formatting, and search functions, and macros, templates, and plug-ins. It has an extremely configurable interface and behavior. You can import and export: text, RTF, HTML, and TreePad. It has clickable hyperlinks and the ability to drag and drop, and is freeware and open source.

This powerful open-source notepad program compares favorably with commercial applications, and in some respects seems even more flexible and convenient. KeyNote combines the advantages of a tabbed and a tree-based interface. A note file may contain any number of notes, which appear as separate tabs. In turn, each tab can hold a tree of subnotes. The software can handle rich formatting (except tables), images (except JPEGs), and hyperlinks to other files and notes. It also supports templates, plug-ins, and macros. You can encrypt your files with a passphrase. We especially liked a feature that automatically captures the contents of the Windows clipboard, allowing you to easily snip information from other applications (including Web browsers). The sheer number of options in KeyNote can be intimidating. And unfortunately, its help file is seriously incomplete. However, intrepid, tech-savvy users will find it a nifty tool for organizing bits of data.

Wine configuration

This application was tested with Wine 0.9.53

This is with a clean configuration directory and running in a 1024x768 virtual desktop.

$ winecfg

Once the .wine directory is built the configuration tool will start and you can set a virtual desktop in the graphics tab if you wish. You will also want to set riched20.dll & riched32.dll as navite (Windows)

Now install the richedit30 update, make sure you go to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and rename riched20.dll and riched32.dll to *.bak or the richedit update wont work.

KeyNote install

$ wine kntsetup.exe

KeyNote first run

tom@tuxonfire ~ $ cd /home/tom/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/KeyNote
tom@tuxonfire ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/KeyNote $ wine keynote.exe

Wine colour and theme support

Have you ever gotten annoyed by Wine/Cedega/CXOffice not matching to your otherwise pretty desktop? It is possiable to change the Wine color scheme to closely match your default desktop colors. You can even install a large varity of themes and have Wine use them to make your favorite applications look even better.

Using Theme/Skins

Firstly go into Wine's virtual drive, which is usually ".wine/drive_c" in your Home directory if you don't see .wine in your home directory then it must be hidden, select View->Show Hidden Files in the file manager. Inside this directory go into the "windows" folder then make a new folder in there called "Themes". Inside here you should make a directory for each theme you want, and put the files ending in ".msstyles" directly into them.

Next you need to tell Wine to use your theme, so run winecfg. In the configuration window select the tab "Desktop Integration" and select the "Theme:" box, which should now have your theme in it's menu. After selecting the theme click "Apply" at the bottom to see how it looks (some themes don't always display properly), then if you are happy click "OK" and your done.

You need to be aware that running some of the more complex themes may result in a major slowdown to Wine. Performance will depend on the theme you select, and your system specifications.

Colour Managment

There are a couple different ways to manage Wine colours, the easiest is to run winecfg and select the tab "Desktop Integration" just as you would with installing a theme. Next select "Item" and choose a item from the drop down list and then click on Color and choose a colour from the provided palette.

Wine Desktop

Blue Desktop

Another option is to edit your user.reg registry file found within your .wine directory. You will need to open it with your favorite text editor and find the line which looks like [Control Panel\Colors] some numbers.

And add a colour theme that has already been created... The great thing about colour theaming is you will not see any performance degradation. Your applications will run at the same speed as before, accept now with your preferred colours!

Below is some colour themes that you may find of use. To add the theme just paste the theme under your [Control Panel\Colors] line.
